DESIGN YOUR OWN PIECED PICTURE QUILT PATTERN
with Betsy Habich
www.betsyhabich.com
NOTE: THIS CLASS IS FULL, BUT YOUR NAME CAN GO ON A WAIT LIST.
Date: May 21, 2025
Time: 9:30 am - 3:30 pm (6 hour class)
Place: Church of Christ, 336 Salmon Falls Rd, Rochester
Cost: $65
Kit Fee: $15, paid at class to instructor directly
Learn how to design your own unique pattern from a personal photo. Starting with an overview of the process, and examples of patterns and quilts made from them, we will discuss design factors such as straight-line vs. curved piecing, how much detail is enough, communicating perspective, and the roles of fabric selection and quilting. Make a pattern from your own pre-approved photo of a pet, flower, or landscape. We will discuss composition, level of detail, and how to make the piecing easier. At the end of the day we will discuss how to use the pattern to make a quilt. Students must supply a photo for review by May 7. No protected or copyrighted photos allowed.

Using fabric scraps and creativity, we’ll build our own neighborhood – that’s really just a Dresden Plate block. This is YOUR neighborhood. No pulling permits and talking the town board into letting you start construction. This mini-quilt finishes at approximately 24”x24.” I will show you how to make your neighborhood much larger, or even smaller! There is no limit on the size. Do you want to focus on colors? Architectural designs? Or a whimsical village? There are thousands of images posted online. A quick Google image search of “Dresden Neighborhoods” will start you on a journey down a rabbit hole of creative ideas. This is a fun, no stress project. When it is complete, YOU are the HOA – no regulations on fences, colors, and how many cars can be in your driveway.
The pattern is a downloadable pdf from designer at www.kimlapacek.com. Name of pattern is "Dresden Neighborhood" and includes paper templates. Any Dresden rulers will work with this project.
